Set the blade depth at 3/8 inch and cut along the letter outlines. Chip the center of the letters out with a hammer and 1/2-inch chisel. Follow up with a sanding drum accessory on a rotary tool to smooth off rough corners and edges. Press the bit into the wood and follow along the outline to carve it out. Hold your piece of wood steady with your non-dominant hand. Push the tip of your rotary tool into the wood to start carving it.

Push down on both handles until the bit cuts into the wood and stops at the preset depth. Begin pushing and pulling the router along as the bit cuts the letter until it’s complete. Some rotary tools also have a sanding bit that you can use. Work in one direction while you carve your wood or else it might look inconsistent.
